Psychics, Mediums and such ilk…

Before I ask my question, some pretext: I have a naturally scientific mind, having gone through an educational system that teaches that there must be proof or logic behind a statement or the existence of a phenomenon. I am not sceptical of the supernatural/spiritual but I want an understanding of how and why before I make a decision.

Recently, like 3 days ago, I visited a psychic, having been referred to her by a friend. Even when I rang to make my appointment, she (Andrea) seemed to have an intuitive understanding of my non-scepticism scepticism (if that makes sense).

When I arrived at her place, I saw that she had already written a page of notes, to which she added during the 90 minute appointment.

I won’t go into the specifics of our conversation but she mentioned things that one couldn’t possibly have guessed with a broad, ambiguous statement. She outlined my family tree (immediate) and even “knew” that I had just met someone, whom she described as my soulmate (Napolean Dynamite always pops up when I see/hear that word).

There were a few things that I sensed that she was really just clutching at straws at but even those were not too far from a discernable truth. Or at least, a truth that I would like to believe (see soulmate reference above).

The person who referred me, and the person who referred her etc.., say that 90% of what she said has come true.

So, my question, has anyone ever been to see such a person and, if so, what were the results?

And as a matter of interest: her first paragraph (at a time when I was questioning the topic but had never mentioned o her): “The only thing on this Earth, that is truly important is LOVE - it is how you get back home and why YOU are here”. I’m not reading too much into that but for an ambiguous opening sentence, it’s quite profound.

I have not gone to a psychic myself but have heard stories from other people who have done that or have gone through “supernatural” experiences.

Are you interested in sharing stories or examining the phenomenon by the use of logic?

A bit of both, I guess.

There are some things that I struggle to use logic or reason to understand, especially given that she knew nothing about me other than my first name.

well, it depends on how she goes about predicting the future.  if she does infact have psychic abilities then she might have already known you’d come to see her.

You were referred to the Psychic & Medium by a close friend? Well, then it might be so that your friend passed on some info about you beforehand to be Googled upon etc. Not saying that happened but it’s possible. And maybe the Psychic & Medium did ask you some clever questions leading to general predictions of an “astrological” nature, i.e. answers that would suit very many in the same situation?

James Randi has been debunking these fraudsters all his life, but sadly their are still plenty of gullible people out there.  Look at how many people follow Scientology for example.

Go and google info on him.. you’ll soon realise that these people use pretty simple techniques to fool you into thinking that they have some special power.

For fuck’s sake, Arthur, how many times are we going to have to do this?

1) There is no spoon.
2) The Matrix has you.
3) Have a cookie.

Marshall, you didn’t pay this person...did you?

Wow - here I was thinking it was dead..

As a first point: whilst I said ‘close friend’ - that was probably an overstatement. I know her but not well and she doesn’t know me well, either. Certainly not to the extent to divulge information about me that she doesn’t know. And the information wasn’t really information you could easily google. Hell, I’d even be surprised if it could be googled - the amount of work she’d have to put in would certainly go beyond the $50 I paid her (which works out to be roughly $30 US or 20 pounds).

Secondly, I paid him. And I paid him cookies. Fantastic service and would recommend to others.

Lastly, on the point of making up my mind about this: the scientist in me will always remain curious. the believer in me believes but with a pinch of salt: I certainly hope that some things come true as there are elements of new beginnings and closure to them that would be good to get.

But the problem is I don’t want to believe that there is a pre-ordained destiny waiting for me to follow in its footsteps. To put it in a very oracle/faux-Matrix way: In my world of blacks, whites and greys, I want to know the feeling of seeing colour for the first time.

is it really a problem?  your mind will still think its the first time if u let it.  watching a movie still gives u emotional highs and lows, even though the story line is static.  if that makes sense…

Makes perfect sense. And I have no doubt I’ll still the enjoy the experiences but I also know that a part of me will still be pissed off that I knew (or was told) that it would happen the way it did (assuming of course, it does).

I’ve listened to Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 5 so many times and each time I pick up on something new and it becomes an even more enjoyable experience. But it will never be the same as when you hear it for the first time. Ditto, BT’s (since we’re on his fan-site) Sunblind or Fibonacci Sequence.

If that makes sense…

it would probably be a good idea to not see a psychic then, if you want to preserve a future experience.

but since u’ve done that maybe take comfort in the fact that psychic abilities are unreliable anyways, and you might never meet your soulmate...if that is what she predicted.  wink

In the future, if anyone has $50 to waste, just call me.  I’ll be happy to blow smoke up your ass for a nominal fee.  Hell, I’ll even knock 50% off just kuz I feel sorry for ya.

But seriously, Marshall, if you feel like you got your money’s worth then that’s just peachy in my book.  It bothers the shit out of me that people with such “gifts” always set themselves up as “consultants” when they could be far more useful, and make more money, in other areas of the job market.  Imagine a waiter who knew exactly what you wanted to order the moment you sat down and how much you were going to tip.  Imagine him as your stock broker or as the cop who could identify a murderer just by spending 5 minutes with OJ Simpson.  Great, hairy, balls of Vince Young, imagine him as your high school guidance councilor!  Now THERE is someone in a position to help.

Ok.  I’m going to tell your future right now, over the internet, having never met you before.  I offer this one free of charge so that I may prove once and for all that I am the real deal.  Here goes…

First, think of a number between 1 and 10.
Got it?

Here goes.

It’s 7.
Don’t lie.  I got you, sucker.  Now for the real prediction:

Someday, you are going to die.

I’ve no idea either.  I guess this is some kind of game called “Say something innocuous, offer no context, then lure people in to Hell’s fiery axewound.”

well Charlie can be a real nit sometimes.  he pays $750 a month for car insurance yet feels the need to lecture someone who paid $50 for a psychic.

I know being obscure and looking like shit is more or less the de-facto norm for the other board, but if you’re going to bother to post here, do me a favour and have it be coherent and relevant, or I’ll just delete your account as some sort of bizarre spambot.

Lynne must have taken her Fox News pill this morning.  $750/month for car insurance?  Maybe...MAYBE if I was 16 again and drove a Bently Continental with pure panda-leather seats, diamond crusted interior, and Fabergé Egg hood ornament.  $750 a month?  Jews for Jesus, that’s $9k a year!  Lynne, would you mind providing a direct link to where I revealed this tidbit of information?  I sure as hell don’t remember offering up that kind irrelevant personal information; besides, the burden of proof lies (no pun intended) with you.

For the record, and not that it’s anyone’s fucking business in the first place, I pay around $400 every 6 months.

And no, I don’t use car seats.
