Sunset Festival - Vinoy Park
This is a new festival (second year) and its right on the water. Last year it was in October and the weather was perfect. Probably the same this year, but maybe a bit cooler at night. Still shorts weather, unless we have a big cold front.
Anyways, Crystal Method are a dj set (do they even do anything else live anymore?), Monk has Hallucination On Film and i’m sure others will be announced. Last year there was Rabbit In the Moon, Ferry Corsten, Carl Cox, Darude, Baby Anne… should be a good time and I live only a few minutes from the venue.

Even tho they don’t do their crazy liveness anymore, Crystal Method’s DJ sets are actually quite enjoyable and accomplished and their gangster sound never gets old.

I would beg to differ.  Last time they were in Dallas and I had the unfortunate experience of being there, they acted more like a pair of coked up rockstars than DJs behind the decks.

That’s strange cuz when I saw them in Minneapolis they were tagteaming a pair of CDJ’s with the fervor and skill of coked up Pro Wrestlers.

see I prefer coked up pizza delivery boy style.... which I think is a cross between rockstars and pro wrestlers, on a amateur level…

this thing is only 10 days away!! By the way, there is free re-entry so if you come in shorts (because it will be warm in the day) you can bring a long sleeve shirt/etc and head out to the car once it cools down. Or in my case, drive 2 min home to have lunch!
Lots of extra stuff going on that night as well, Sunset is just the begining!
Lee Burridge (where I will be) - Hyde Park Cafe (Tampa) free for ladies, $10 for guys before midnight
George Acosta - Cafe Alma (St. Pete)
Edgar V - Jacksons (Tampa)
Palm Bay Club - St. Pete

average set from BT........ seems like he waited too long to really get going, just didn’t work. Then he stopped when it seemed like he was going to go on for a few more… only highlight was ZZT - Lower State of Consciousness (Justice remix). Lowlight was finishing with that tired as hell Nirvana remix.

I really enjoyed his set-first time seeing him so I guess I dont have anything to compare it to.  I danced the whole time he was on, and really I normally hate Nirvana but enjoyed the way he mixed it up.
What I didnt like too much was Crystal Method, at one point they totally lost the crowd, hardly anyone was dancing.  At least BT kept everyone hyped and dancing.

I really had a good time and will be there next year for sure.

they lost the crowd because of a number of reasons - the area isn’t really into the sound they were playing, they played a 2 hour set, it was the end of a lonnng day, they aren’t really relevent anymore, etc… musically they were my favorite part of the day but I wasn’t dancing. I was tired.
And although I say it was my favorite music of the day, it wasn’t exactly exciting. They pretty much played every remix on their re-release of Vegas.

Which is sad, because that entire re-release is a fucking travesty of torrid shit and crappy remastering, and never should have seen the light of day. Those guys have reportedly gotten much better with their DJing skills, but at what cost? I miss watching Scott and Ken go nuts in the booth while kicking over a couple dozen synths. Those were the good old days.

I just saw em last weekend and they weren’t all that bad.  They threw in a bunch of NON-TCM tracks “Justice” blah blah blah.  It really wasn’t half-bad.

It seemed like they were more into shaking hands with the crowd and getting their “celebrity on” than working the boards? At one point neither of them were even behind the DJ stand....I think BT did a much better job and enjoyed his set.
