Amazon MP3

Amazon just announced their online download music store.  Basically another competitor to ITunes.

Not available on Amazon MP3: Warner Music and Sony BMG labels ... just a few artists they’ll be missing there.

Amazon MP3 is DRM-FREE so that’s a win for the service.

That I didn’t know—and I agree, a definite positive.

What does DRM stand for and what is it?

Digital Rights Management.

It is what keeps you from converting music that you buy from Itunes to mp3 format so you can play it on other devices.

Agreed, DRM is the epitome of evil.  Aside from Amazon MP3, what other music downloading services surpass iTunes?

None. Amazon is the first real competitor since the inception of the iTunes Music Store that actually offers a comparable, cheaper alternative with a real music catalogue. Everyone else prior to this have used subscription-based models (Napster, Real Rhapsody, etc.) or tried the iTunes a-la-carte model and failed (Zune Marketplace). Not to mention, all of those aforementioned attempts used the crappy WMA format with enough DRM that you couldn’t even use the files outside the computer you bought ‘em on.

Amazon by contrast, made a huge leap by retaining the DRM-free MP3 format, using a respectably high bitrate (256kbps), offering the same content as iTunes (for the most part), and offering their music cheaper than iTunes. They also somehow managed to get all the studios to go along with it, for no reason other than to knock Apple off their high horse.

I was pretty vocal against all the other services, but Amazon has a hit on their hands… and this will be fantastic for competition.

So therefore also MUCH cheaper than iTunes Plus, eh?  Is it Geo-locked, though?
