Did anyone catch that Looking Glass we passed through a few years ago?

I’m just going to pretend its 1997 again and I don’t know anything about BT except how much I like Ima. In fact, I think I am going to re-imagine that Ima is something like the Universe. I sure am glad it happened, but I’ll be damned if I am going to try and imagine how exactly....

No cults or young girls or DJ gigs or really old weird fans or myspace blogs or worshiping fanboy masses. When I could count how many other people even knew what Ima was on two hands… Bless you oh glorious ignorance!

It was certainly a once in a lifetime experience to hear IMA UK from start to finish for the first time! I remember I should have been sleeping after and between nightshifts in the Autumn of 1995 instead of spinning a CD I bought the evening before. After the initial first listen I was hooked and had IMA on repeat at least 4-5 times. I simply couldn’t stop listening to it and I just didn’t want to let go of that amazing inspirational and soulful vibe I got from it. I wouldn’t have changed a thing on it. And it didn’t sound rushed, it had a natural effortless flow it to it which has been more or less been missing since IMA. I haven’t felt like that with any other BT album since. Good times indeed, thanks for the reminder Chas.

Chas, I thought you should know that the Colts will be healthy when the Pats meet them in the AFC Championship.  Indy 34 NE 24, Colts FTW!

Go Sox, anyhow.

Whoa is right.  Along with holy freakin shit balls.  Hi guys smile

So yeah, nice to see that BT universe drama has gotten exponentially more insane.  And here I was hoping to find out news of some great new tunage being released and a surgical removal of a head from an ass.  Oh well.

Man you don’t have to go back to IMA, all this shit started with peach’s bizzare worshipfullness and the move to MYspace.  Hate to say I saw it comin, but I saw it comin.  I never kept up with BT’s self important ramblings and never frequent his music board and i’m still sick of the man.  Bring back the musician dammit and shit can this cartoon guy.

This is more like, “Leave the drama for your mama, unless it’s baby mama drama, then you might want to call Obama, if you wanna.”

A flyer, hmm? How about a collage with an empty Barcelona chair with portraits of IMA, ESCM and MISL in the background. Or a pic with the ubiquitous white plastic chair which would be a nice reference to an old thread from way back wink

Awesome because I can guarantee I know absolutely nothing!
I always assumed that BT was just some sort of moniker for a music-producing robot called “stutter-ed”

Still, this forum was absolutely dead before the shit kicked off. Now its sort-of half-dead. Every cloud…

The problem becomes when people ever hero-worship someone for something that they have done instead of who they actually are. It would seem logical to assume that they correlate, but really, especially with brilliant people (in one regard) they are often totally opposed. I can count far more brilliant fucked up people than brilliant balanced people that I have come to know in my life. Brian is at the top of the former list, although I won’t pretend to know him more than many here.

My original point is just that I wish I have never graduated from fan to anything else.

But really the whole thing, how ever much you know about it, is just sad. Profoundly sad. I look at BT’s life and I see only brilliance buried in bullshit. Indeed it makes me angry. I guess I have always been angry about the many many poor choices I’ve seen made. Moving to LA. Wanting stardom and recognition over purity of art. Being in a relationship with a Fan half one’s age. DJing. Hair. Whatever weakness that allows someone to consider something even resembling a cult. The whole thing feels like a tragedy, and I’m not even sure what you can learn from it. What I emphatically believe is this however, that every person has the chance to rise above their circumstances and fulfill their potential, and BT will never have done this, and I fear will thus be ultimately forever unhappy. And while I do fear this is insult to injury if the man really did lose his daughter to some nutcase, or not, or whatever, I think every person that has come to know the man behind the music should take a long hard look at the choices people make, at the lens through which they decide to view their experience, and make corrections as we see fit to our own lives. That a man I once admired as much as anyone can has become instead a sort of cautionary tale to me, I find depressing yet understandably macro-realistic.

In the meantime the mess seems to have a dysfunctional magnetism to it, and the people rallying for or against it seem to revel in it, which I also find unfortunate. While this may be the closest any of us get to knowing a Britney Spears, I urge everyone to finally tune out. To simplify your relationship to preordering CDs on Amazon. To leave the BTs and Peaches and SuperFans to their ultimate unbalanced end.

I remember meeting Brian the first time at some rave in MA a long time ago. And he seemed so breathlessly enthusiastic, like every fan he met was a revelation. He was two years younger than I am now and I was a starry eyed kid talking to his hero. I want to just remember that BT - aloft in an impossible light, the magic maker. And while I will always treasure the experience of the ET party, the people, the look on Brian’s face after I made my little speech, that I met one of my best friends there… I will forever have to fight the recoloration of that memory - the bittersweet postscript.

And while my intention was always to just have some effect on Brian’s life, to somehow pay him back for this music I felt was so important to me, I apologize to myself for selfishly ever wanting more than to be a simple fan. The only net plus has been the relationships on this website.

My heart goes out to little Kaia. May the lessons of a difficult life begin to evade her soon. And I hope Brian finds whatever it is he has always been looking for some day and that it makes him happy.

The “BT Missing” parody is actually a clever insight into the bigger phenomenon at play. Because the performance stage has been expanded from the artist to the fans, there is now a fight over true insight into the artist. There is in fact a “custody battle” over BT’s character, two groups taking sides and claiming the other side, or forces consonant with the other side, has “abducted” him at some point in the past. I wonder if that deeply folded self-reference was consciously intended.

I suppose I regret including myself in that expanded stage to some degree or another in the past. Not because of recent events, but just on principle. The relationship an artist has with the fans should be in terms of providing music, nothing more. At least that’s the classic understanding, well before every artist now feels like they need to blog about their personal life to keep it real with the fanbase.

If a celebrity musician gains the respect and attention of us youthful nobodies, the tendency will be to try to define that celeb’s identity, even though we really know nothing about him in any meaningful sense of “know”, and then to feed off that celeb’s perceived identity to help establish one’s own identity.

But this is the darkside of artists opening up in dimensions other than the music dimension. It’s potentially a bi-directional line, not only of inspiration and insight, but of grief, nastiness, hurt, disingenuousness, bringing out the best or worst or most dishonest in people, amplified because celebrity is involved.

just some thoughts
